Moving to Reno from Texas

Texas's 30-day vehicle rule and 90-day license window

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles gives new residents 30 days to register a vehicle, and its page for newcomers says a Texas driver license must be obtained from the Department of Public Safety within 90 days. Those are rules for arrivals; the practical lesson when leaving is to collect your title, insurance and registration papers and to keep Texas registration current until a Nevada one is issued.

Texas has a franchise tax on businesses, not on personal income. If you own a business entity, the Texas Comptroller is the office to ask about winding it down or registering it in Nevada.

Taxes: both states skip the personal income tax

Texas has no personal income tax, and its state sales tax is 6.25 percent, with local jurisdictions adding up to 2 percentage points for a combined cap of 8.25 percent, per the Texas Comptroller.
