Fernley, Fallon and Lyon County

East of Sparks the valley opens into the Lahontan area and the farm country around Fallon. The towns here are smaller and more spread out than the Reno-Sparks area, with a high share of owner-occupied homes. Fernley is the largest town east of Sparks, with about 8,800 households.

The Census puts Fernley's median home value near $367,000, and about 72 percent of its households own their home. The drive is 63 minutes on I-80 and US 50 Alternate. Fernley sits on I-80 between Sparks and the Lahontan area, so a move to or from the Truckee Meadows follows one familiar road.

Silver Springs and Yerington sit on the US 50 and US 95A side.

Fallon is the Churchill County center, 60.6 miles east.

Fallon has about 3,800 households and a Census median home value of about $283,000. About half of its households rent, a much larger share than in Fernley or Silver Springs, so apartment and duplex moves with stairs and tight parking show up here as often as house moves.
