Elko, Winnemucca and rural Nevada

Rural Nevada is a long state. I-80 carries you east to Lovelock, Winnemucca and Elko, and US 95 runs south to Tonopah. The towns are small by Reno standards but they have real moving needs: new jobs in mining and health care, retirements, and families heading to or from the Truckee Meadows.

Lovelock, the Pershing County seat, is 90.7 miles out and about 1 h 35 min. Its roughly 590 households are the smallest group on this page, with a Census median home value of about $184,000. Winnemucca is 163.3 miles and about 2 h 46 min away. It is the Humboldt County seat with about 3,400 households and about 60 percent owners.

For both towns the drive is on one interstate, which keeps the route simple. What takes thought is the day: the crew's drive time out, loading, and the drive home add up, so a rural move is often set for a full day.

Elko is the largest town in rural Nevada and the farthest east.

With about 7,600 households, Elko is bigger than Winnemucca by more than double, and it sits at about 5,100 feet. The drive is 284 miles on I-80 and about 4 h 49 min without stops. Tonopah is on a different road. US 95 and US 95A lead there, 229.1 miles and about 4 h 40 min from Sparks, to a town of roughly 1,000 households at 6,126 feet. The mileage is shorter than Elko's, but the drive time is nearly the same.
