Moving between Reno and Texas

Texas is the second-largest source of movers into Nevada, about 8,300 people in 2024 by Census estimate, and the six Texas routes run from El Paso at about 1,152 miles to Houston at about 1,846. A move that long is priced by weight and set up well ahead.

Texas does not border Nevada, so every Texas move is a true cross-country haul. The pages below cover the six Texas cities on our map, both into and out of Reno.

The six Texas cities, nearest first

El Paso comes first at about 1,152 miles, the only one that bends south through Arizona on I-10. Then comes Dallas-Fort Worth at about 1,651 and Killeen and Temple at about 1,655. Austin is about 1,689, San Antonio about 1,698 and Houston about 1,846.

That puts the Texas Triangle of Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Houston within about 200 miles of each other as far as Reno is concerned. The route differences come from the city, not the roads.

The roads between the two

Our route data shows most Texas drives using I-40 and US-95, running diagonally across New Mexico, Arizona and southern Nevada. San Antonio and El Paso lean on I-10 instead. There are no high mountain summits on these drives, so winter closures are a lesser worry than on the California routes.

Two-way traffic, tilted toward Nevada

In 2024 the Census counted about 8,300 people moving from Texas to Nevada and about 6,100 moving from Nevada to Texas. Both figures have wide margins of error, so read them as rough sizes. On a five-year average, about 820 people a year moved from Texas to Washoe County, the county that holds Reno and Sparks.

Texas also levies no state income tax, as Nevada does not, so many Texas movers find the tax picture in Reno familiar. The state tax and DMV table shows how the two compare.

What customers say about O'Brien's

Francie H.

We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day. All three of the gentlemen who moved us were professional and courteous from start to finish. From the initial phone call to the completion of our move, we felt like we were treated as family. We would definitely use them again and recommend O'Brien's Moving and Storage to our friends in the future.
