Moving from Nevada to Texas

Texas is the largest state on this page and the one that most resembles Nevada on tax: no personal income tax, a sales tax instead. The agencies below set the deadlines.

Thirty days for the car, ninety for the license

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles tells new residents they have 30 days from the time they move to register their vehicle in the state. The same page says a new resident must obtain a Texas driver license from the Department of Public Safety within 90 days, so the two clocks run on different schedules.

Service members have their own rules on the TxDMV military page. Everyone else should treat the car as the earlier task and plan the license inside the three-month window. Write both dates on the same calendar the day you sign the estimate, because a long-distance move leaves little slack once the truck is loaded.

Sales tax in place of income tax

Texas has no state income tax according to the Comptroller. The state has a franchise tax on businesses, which matters to an owner relocating a company but not to a wage earner.

The state sales and use tax is 6.25 percent on most retail sales, leases and rentals, and local jurisdictions may add up to 2 percent, for a combined maximum of 8.25 percent. Nevada's statewide minimum is 6.85 percent.
