Moving from Reno to Dallas-Fort Worth

Dallas-Fort Worth is a large metro and a long drive, close to four driving days at 500 miles a day. Nevada and Texas both skip the state income tax, so the paycheck stays familiar, but the sales tax, the summer heat and the housing market do not.

Texas deadlines: 30 days and 90 days

Texas DMV says you have 30 days from the time you move to register your vehicle, and that new residents must obtain a Texas driver license from the Department of Public Safety within 90 days. The two clocks are different, so the registration comes first.

Taxes: no income tax, but sales tax

The Texas Comptroller says Texas has no personal income tax and imposes a 6.25 percent state sales and use tax on most retail sales. Local jurisdictions can add up to 2 percent, for a combined maximum of 8.25 percent. Nevada's statewide minimum is 6.85 percent, and counties add their own portion.

Texas does have a franchise tax on businesses, which matters if you run a company rather than draw a wage.

Heat, storms and humidity

NOAA's normals for the Dallas FAA airport show a January high of 57.7 and low of 37.9, and a July high of 96.9 with a low of 77.7. Annual precipitation is 38.3 inches and snowfall about 1.7 inches. The summers are hotter and wetter than Reno, and spring thunderstorms are part of the calendar.

The city of Dallas has 1,307,930 residents in the ACS, with a median household income of $70,518, a median gross rent of $1,472, a median home value of $320,700 and 57.6 percent renters. The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro has 7,985,590 residents, a median household income of $90,275, median rent of $1,614 and median home value of $359,500. Census flows for 2016-2020 show about 641 people a year moving from Washoe County to five North Texas counties; the reverse flow is within its margin of error, so people move both ways.
