Moving From Nevada to Colorado

Colorado pulls in about twice as many Nevadans as it sends back: the Census counts roughly 1,823 people moving from Nevada to Colorado in 2024 and roughly 3,886 moving the other way. For those who do go east, here is what the state will ask of you.

Colorado's two clocks

Colorado's DMV says that after you establish residency you must transfer your license within 30 days and title and register your vehicle within 90 days. Residency starts at the earliest of owning or operating a Colorado business, taking Colorado employment or living there 90 consecutive days.

A new job starts the clock before the moving truck arrives, so schedule the license visit for the first or second week. A vehicle title and emissions check come later in the 90-day window.

Taxes: flat 4.4 percent

The Colorado income tax rate is 4.4 percent, a flat rate on all taxable income, and the state sales tax is 2.9 percent. Home-rule cities, counties and districts add their own sales taxes, so the combined rate in Denver or Colorado Springs is well above the state figure.

Nevada charges no state personal income tax, so wages will be taxed once you are a Colorado resident. Confirm part-year filing with a tax professional.

The Colorado housing picture

Colorado's ACS median home value is 539,400 dollars and its median gross rent is 1,761 dollars a month, with a median household income of 95,470 dollars. About 499 people a year left Washoe County for Colorado in the five-year county data and about 475 came the other way, a nearly even split.
