Moving from Denver to Reno

Census counts put the flow from Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties to Washoe County at about 142 people a year (2016-2020), against about 209 moving the other way. Colorado as a whole sent about 3,886 people to Nevada in 2024, against 1,823 going the other way.

The drive: I-25, US 287 and I-80

The truck takes I-25 north for about 64 miles, US 287 for about 46 miles toward Wyoming, and then I-80 for about 902 miles. That I-80 run crosses southern Wyoming, passes through Salt Lake City, crosses the Bonneville Salt Flats and ends at Sparks. A short I-270 connector adds about 6 miles in the Denver area. The total is about 1,036 miles.

The Wyoming section is the one to watch. I-80 in southern Wyoming is high, exposed and windy, and it is known for winter closures and wind restrictions on trucks. WYDOT posts closures, and Colorado's COtrip site covers the Front Range start. Utah DOT and Nevada DOT cover the rest. Check them all before a winter departure.

At 500 miles a day the map says three days behind the wheel, with a free-flow time of 17 h 24 min. Overnight stops are part of the haul, and a winter closure in Wyoming can add time that the map cannot show. That is why your written estimate sets the delivery window.

The routing data lists no mountain pass on the route, and the Sierra summits are not part of the trip.

Denver and Reno side by side

Denver averages about 49.0 inches of snow a year, against about 20.9 at the Reno airport. The January average high is 46.5 F in Denver and 47.7 F in Reno, but Denver's January low of 17.6 F is far colder than Reno's 26.1 F. July highs are 90.2 F and 93.9 F.
