People who move inside Nevada often compare the two big metros. Same state, same tax system and same DMV, but the desert and the high desert feel different once you are living there.
Weather: desert heat against four seasons
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals show Las Vegas averaging a January high of 58.0 F and a July high of 103.8 F, with 3.99 inches of precipitation a year. Reno's airport averages 47.7 F in January and 93.9 F in July, with 7.35 inches of precipitation and 20.9 inches of snow.
In practice, Las Vegas movers deal with heat on moving day, and Reno movers deal with cold mornings and the occasional storm. A household moving north should plan on coats and a tire check; a household moving south should plan on an early-morning load and plenty of water for everyone.

People and housing
The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey counts about 660,400 people in Las Vegas city and about 273,200 in Reno city. Median household income is $73,877 in Las Vegas and $80,760 in Reno. The median home value is $427,900 in Las Vegas and $548,300 in Reno.
Rent is nearly identical: $1,563 in Las Vegas and $1,556 in Reno. Renters are 43.4 percent of Las Vegas households and 50.2 percent of Reno's, so Reno has the larger renter share even though it is the smaller city.
Taxes and the DMV stay in one system
Because both cities are in Nevada, you keep your Nevada driver license and registration when you move between them, and you update your address with the DMV. Your sales tax rate will differ because counties add their own portion to the 6.85 percent statewide minimum; the Nevada Department of Taxation publishes the current rate by county.
Neither city sits in a state with an individual income tax. Property taxes are set by county, so a Washoe County bill follows the rules on our property tax page.
The drive and what it means for the move
The road from our warehouse to Las Vegas is 419.7 miles, about 8 h 18 min of driving, mostly on US 95. A Las Vegas to Reno move stays inside Nevada, so it falls under Nevada Transportation Authority rules, and O'Brien's holds Nevada Transportation Authority CPCN 1070 for moves within Nevada. Because the trip is long, ask your estimator how the load is sequenced and what the written estimate says about the delivery window.

Which one fits you
If you want snow within an hour, a lake and cool summer nights, Reno is the match. If you want winter highs in the upper fifties and a larger city, Las Vegas is. Many households choose by season: they work in one and spend weekends in the other. Whichever you pick, a free in-home estimate from O'Brien's comes with 10 free heavy-duty boxes you keep.
