Reno and Boise are often on the same short list for people leaving larger coastal markets. They are both mountain-west cities with an outdoor lifestyle, but they differ in tax structure, winter pattern and the distance between them.
The road between them
The drive from our Sparks warehouse to Boise runs 417.7 miles, with about 217 miles on US 95 and 162 on I-80 before a short stretch on ID 55 and I-84. No Sierra pass sits on the route, so the crossing is a high desert drive that is mostly open in all seasons, although the last stretch in Idaho can see winter weather.
That is a long haul, and a move in either direction crosses a state line, so it is an interstate move under federal rules. If you are moving to Nevada, you book with O'Brien's and we coordinate the move from Idaho through the Bekins network, then deliver, unpack and store in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window.

Taxes and registration
Idaho's State Tax Commission lists a flat 5.3 percent individual income tax rate for 2025, with the first $4,811 of a single filer's income at zero. Its sales tax is 6 percent. Nevada has no individual income tax and a 6.85 percent statewide minimum sales tax, with county add-ons.
Idaho asks new residents to title and register a vehicle and apply for a license within 30 days, and Nevada uses the same 30 days. Our new resident checklist covers the Nevada side.
Housing and income
In the 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey, Boise city shows a median household income of $83,904, a median gross rent of $1,446 and a median home value of $484,800. Reno city shows a median household income of $80,760, a median gross rent of $1,556 and a median home value of $548,300. Renters are 36.8 percent of Boise households and 50.2 percent of Reno's, which makes Boise more of an owner market.
The Boise City metro area has about 811,115 people, while the city itself has 237,242, a little under Reno city's 273,212.
Climate side by side
NOAA's normals show Boise's January high at 38.8 F with 17.6 inches of snow a year and 11.51 inches of precipitation. Reno's January high is 47.7 F, with 20.9 inches of snow and 7.35 inches of precipitation. Boise's July high is 92.7 F and Reno's 93.9 F. Boise winters run colder in the daytime, and Reno's mild days come with freezing nights.

People moving between the two
The Census Bureau's 2024 one-year estimates count about 2,150 people moving from Idaho to Nevada and about 3,270 moving from Nevada to Idaho, with wide margins of error on both, so treat them as a rough picture of two-way traffic.
