Las Vegas to Reno: the largest flow in Nevada

About 4,392 people a year moved from Clark County (Las Vegas) into Washoe County (Reno and Sparks) in 2016-2020, with a margin of error of 894. About 1,887 a year moved the other way, so the net flow was about 2,500 people a year toward Reno.

  • Data page

Clark County is the largest single source of movers into Washoe County. The table above shows the inbound Clark row from the Census county-to-county flows for 2016-2020; the notes below add the outbound side, other pairs and context.

Data: U.S. Census Bureau, ACS county-to-county migration flows 2016-2020 (5-year, yearly averages with margins of error).

Net flow toward Reno

Subtract 1,887 from 4,392 and the result is about 2,505 more people a year arriving in Washoe than leaving for Clark. The margins are 894 and 517, which combine to about 1,030, so the gap is more than twice the noise. Few pairs in the county file are as clear as this one.

For scale, Washoe County's whole net domestic migration for 2020-2025 was about 15,094 people, and Clark County's was about 84,307. Clark's population reached 2,407,226 in 2025, so the Reno flow is a small share of Las Vegas's moves.

Clark County and the rest of Northern Nevada

Clark County also sends people to the smaller counties: about 548 a year to Carson City (plus or minus 256), 348 to Lyon County (plus or minus 255) and 172 to Douglas County (plus or minus 107). The reverse flows are smaller for Carson City (284) and Lyon (82) and larger for Douglas (260). Churchill County loses about 509 people a year to Clark and gains about 43.

The pattern is consistent: more Nevadans move from Las Vegas toward the north than the other way, except for Douglas County and Churchill County.

Reno and Las Vegas side by side

The 2020-2024 American Community Survey shows a median rent of $1,592 in the Reno metro and $1,626 in the Las Vegas metro, a median home value of $502,300 against $431,000, and a median household income of $87,485 against $76,472. Rent is close, home value is about 14 percent lower in Las Vegas, and income is lower there too. Both cities are in Nevada, so a move between them does not change which state's tax rules apply.

The drive and the routes

Las Vegas is 420 miles and about 8 hours 20 minutes from the Sparks warehouse by free-flow drive, mostly on US 95. Because both ends are in Nevada, the move is covered by the in-state authority described on the moves within Nevada page. Route pages for the two directions are Las Vegas to Reno and Reno to Las Vegas.

The written estimate gives the pickup and delivery dates, as for any long haul.

What the figure cannot say

The county-to-county file counts people. It cannot show whether a mover relocated for work, school or retirement, whether the household sold or rented, or how many hired a mover. The 2016-2020 five-year average also ends before the most recent years, so recent flows may differ.
