Unlike a move from another state, this move stays inside Nevada. Las Vegas sits 2,351 feet above sea level, the metro has about 2.3 million residents, and the road north crosses desert basins and ranges for most of a day. For moves that stay in Nevada, see moving within Nevada and Reno to Henderson.

US 95 across the state

The route block lists 272 miles of US 95, 28 miles of US 95A, 23 miles of the US 95 Alternate and 21 miles of SR 265. The truck leaves the Las Vegas valley, heads northwest through Beatty and Tonopah, passes Hawthorne, and finishes by way of Fallon or Fernley into the Truckee Meadows. The road distance is 420 miles against 335 in a straight line.

There are few towns and long gaps between fuel stops, which is why a household truck plans the day around them. Free-flow driving is 8 hours 20 minutes. No named mountain pass is on the route, but central Nevada has high basins where winter snow and wind can slow a truck.

Summer heat to winter cold

Las Vegas records a July high of about 104 and a low of 80, and only 4 inches of precipitation a year. Reno's July high is about 94, its January lows reach 26, and it averages 21 inches of snow. Check NDOT road reports before a winter move.

Las Vegas and Reno compared

Las Vegas city has about 660,000 residents, a median household income near $73,877, a median gross rent near $1,563 and a median home value near $427,900 in the American Community Survey. Reno city's medians are $80,760, $1,556 and $548,300. Nevada has no state income tax on wages at either end, so the tax change that moves Californians does not apply.

Flows run both ways. The Census counts about 4,392 people a year moving from Clark to Washoe County and about 1,887 moving the other way.

A move inside Nevada

A Las Vegas to Reno move stays inside Nevada, so it falls under Nevada Transportation Authority rules, and O'Brien's holds NTA CPCN 1070 for moves within Nevada. You do not need a Nevada DMV new-resident transfer, though a change of address is still needed.

At the Reno end O'Brien's offers delivery, unpacking and storage in the 30,000 square foot Sparks warehouse, with vault storage from $40 per month. Read moves inside Nevada and to California.

How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent

O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

Both movers were courteous, efficient and very carful with my furniture. Also, talking with Janet over the phone was a pleasure.

Laurie I.

The two employees showed up on time and were very polite and ready to work. Our quote was 8 hours and they finished in 5 hours. Office staff checked in prior to move and confirmed all details and check in after move to make sure everything was taken care of. Would use this company again for sure!
