Moving to Reno from Utah

Utah's 60-day vehicle window and the license question

The Utah DMV allows new residents 60 days to transfer titles and registrations. For driver licenses, the Utah Driver License Division lists residency triggers rather than a day count: entering the state to make it your home, staying six months or more in a calendar year, or getting a Utah license or registration. If you are unsure, check with the Utah Driver License Division. These are arrival rules; leaving Utah, keep your registration valid until Nevada's is issued.

If you are leaving a Utah job or a home you owned, keep a record of the date your Utah residency ended in case a part-year return is needed. The Utah State Tax Commission is the office to ask.

A flat 4.45 percent against no state income tax

Utah's individual income tax is a flat 4.45 percent for 2026 according to the Utah Code, and its state sales tax rate is 4.85 percent before local additions. Nevada has no state personal income tax, but its statewide base sales rate is higher at 6.85 percent.
