The Inland Empire has about 4.6 million residents and sits 891 feet above sea level at the foot of the Cajon Pass. It is the closest big Southern California metro to the eastern Sierra route, and the route reflects that.

I-215, I-15 and 383 miles of US 395

The truck uses about 20 miles of I-215 and 15 miles of I-15 to leave the valley, then climbs onto US 395 near Victorville for 383 miles, finishing on 34 miles of I-580 into Reno. The road distance is 465 miles against 408 straight-line.

That makes the Inland Empire about 29 miles shorter than Orange County and about 4 shorter than Los Angeles. The free-flow driving time is 9 hours 30 minutes, which a loaded truck should not be expected to match; the written estimate sets the delivery window.

Heat in the desert, snow on the pass

Conway Summit, about 8,140 feet, is the one named pass. The high desert section of US 395 can be 100 degrees in summer and icy in winter. Riverside's July high is about 93 and Reno's about 94, so summer arrival feels familiar, but Riverside has 9 inches of rain and no real snow while Reno has 21 inches of snow. Check Caltrans QuickMap and NDOT before winter dates.

Riverside and Reno compared

Riverside city has about 319,000 residents, a median household income near $91,045, a median gross rent near $1,914 and a median home value near $584,800 in the American Community Survey. Reno city's medians are $80,760, $1,556 and $548,300. Home values are close, which makes a like-for-like trade more realistic than from the coast.

Flows run both ways: the Census counts about 227 people a year moving from Washoe County to Riverside and San Bernardino counties, against 402 coming this way.
