Moving from Nevada to New York

Thirty days for the car and thirty for the license

The New York DMV says that if you move to New York and become a resident, you must register your vehicle there within 30 days of becoming a resident. It also says you must exchange an out-of-state license from another U.S. state within 30 days of becoming a New York resident. Both clocks run from the day you become a resident.

Bring your Nevada title and registration, proof of insurance valid in New York and proof of your address. New York City addresses may need extra documents, so check the DMV page for your county.

The income tax and the sales tax

New York's personal income tax reaches 10.3 percent on income between five million and 25 million dollars, and 10.9 percent on income over 25 million dollars. Most households fall in much lower brackets. The state sales tax is 4 percent, and counties and cities add their own, so the rate at the register is higher. In the New York City area, a regional transportation tax adds 0.375 percent.
