Washington, D.C. is a dense destination, with 58.5 percent of households renting and a median gross rent of 1,954 dollars a month. About 503 people moved from Nevada to D.C. in the Census 2024 estimate, a larger flow than its small size suggests.

Sixty days and a license first

D.C. DMV says that if you move to the District, you have 60 calendar days from the date you begin to live there to register your vehicle. Its license page says a D.C. license is required if you live in the District 60 days or more and drive. D.C. wants the license converted before the vehicle is registered, so the order of visits matters.

A D.C. inspection is also required. Bring proof of address, your Nevada title and proof of insurance, and expect residential parking permits to be a separate step.

Taxes: 10.75 percent at the top

The Office of Tax and Revenue lists the highest bracket at 10.75 percent, the top step of a graduated schedule. The general sales tax rate stays at 6 percent through September 30, 2027, after a planned increase was postponed.

Nevada has no state personal income tax, so the contrast is sharp. People who work in D.C. but live in Maryland or Virginia face a different set of rules; a tax professional can sort out which state taxes your pay.

City living changes what you move

With a median home value of 737,100 dollars and more than half of households renting, many arrivals downsize from a Washoe County house to a D.C. apartment. That is where storage earns its keep: furniture that does not fit can wait in Sparks, and our downsizing checklist helps sort what goes.

The commuter metro is covered on the Reno to Washington, D.C. page.
