Moving to Reno from the District of Columbia
The District gives new residents 60 days to register a vehicle and taxes income at up to 10.75 percent on earnings above $1,000,000, while Nevada has no state personal income tax. Nevada's own license and registration window is 30 days.
Washington, DC residents move for many reasons, but most arrive with a similar profile: a small home full of things, a car they may or may not need, and a job that can often move with them. This page takes the District's rules first and Nevada's second.

What the District asks of you
DC DMV says that if you move to the District you have 60 calendar days from the date you begin to live there to register your vehicle, and a DC license is required once you live in the District for 60 days or more. Those clocks apply to people arriving. If you are leaving, cancel your DC registration only after your Nevada registration is in place, and keep your DC title safe for the Nevada DMV.
Residential parking permits, a DC voter registration and any DC-issued tags on a bicycle or scooter are also worth closing out before the truck arrives.
A high-bracket income tax, then none
The District's income tax schedule rises in brackets, with a top rate of 10.75 percent on income over $1,000,000, and its general sales tax is 6 percent. Nevada has no state personal income tax on wages. A part-year DC return is common in the year of the move. Ask a tax professional where your tax home sits if your job is in Maryland or Virginia.
Housing matters as much as tax. Housing costs are a common reason DC households look west. Our cost-of-living compare tool lays out the Census numbers.
Moving out of a DC apartment or rowhouse
Many DC moves start in buildings with elevators, loading docks that require reservations and narrow rowhouse stairs. Tell the O'Brien's estimator what the access is, and ask about the building's rules for move-out hours. You book the move with O'Brien's, and we coordinate it from your DC address through the Bekins network. Our Sparks crews handle delivery and unpacking.
Get a Nevada license and register vehicles within 30 days of becoming a resident, and expect no state income tax withholding. The complete steps are in the moving to Reno guide.
If the move is a federal job transfer
Many DC households move on orders. If your move is a military household goods move, booking runs through your installation transportation office and the Personal Property Office, and O'Brien's is DOD approved to move and store military household goods. See military moving for the process.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.
Your rights on an interstate move
Federal booklets every interstate mover must give you
Nevada expects a license within 30 days of becoming a resident. The District's own 60-day rule applies only to people moving into DC.
Will DC still tax my income after I leave?
DC taxes residents on income, so a part-year return is common in the year you leave. Nevada does not tax wages at the state level. A tax professional can confirm your own case.
Is there storage if my Reno home is not ready?
Yes. Vault storage in Sparks starts from $40 per month and can be short or long term.
Extremely happy with the moving experience. The moving team showed up on time, friendly and polite. They did a wonderful job moving our boxes and furniture to the new location. We moved a three bedroom home and I could not be more pleased with the employees who assisted with the move. Highly recommend O'Brien moving for your move.

Talk about organized people. I peeked in the truck about an hour into the job and was amazed at how well organized it was and how many of my things had protective coverings. Our bed is a mechanical one and a nightmare to us, but these guys had no issue with it at all. Although I have no desire to ever move again--but if I did, I would be calling these guys for sure!!!
