Moving to Reno from Tennessee
Tennessee has no tax on wages and repealed its Hall tax on interest and dividends from 2021, while its state sales tax is 7 percent. About 352 people a year move from Tennessee into Washoe County.

Tennessee draws people in from other states, and some of those people later head west again. Nashville and Memphis households that choose Reno are usually weighing a 7 percent sales tax against Nevada's rates, plus housing costs and distance from family.
The Tennessee tax picture
Tennessee never taxed wages, and its Hall income tax on interest and dividends was repealed for tax periods beginning January 1, 2021 or later. The general state sales tax rate is 7 percent, local rates cannot exceed 2.75 percent, and food is taxed at 4 percent. Tennessee's DMV rules
Tennessee tells new residents to register vehicles within 30 days and to get a Tennessee license no later than 30 days after establishing residency. They are rules for arrivals. When you leave, keep your Tennessee license valid until Nevada issues one.

The 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey lists Tennessee at about 7.07 million people, with a median household income of $69,595, median gross rent of $1,189 and a median home value of $286,700; 33.1 percent of households rent. Census county data put the flow into Washoe at about 352 people a year over 2018 to 2022.
