Tennessee shares Nevada's habit of leaving wages alone, which surprises people who expect every eastern state to tax income. Where it differs is sales tax, and the details are below.
Tennessee's Department of Revenue titles its guidance for newcomers 'New Residents Should Register Within 30 Days'. The Department of Safety states that new residents who hold a driver license from another state must get a Tennessee license no later than thirty days after establishing residency.
Gather the document list from the county clerk and the driver service center before you go. Keep your Nevada title and proof of address at hand, and book any appointment before the truck is loaded so the first week is not spent waiting for a slot. Tennessee counties handle title and plates through the county clerk, so the office near your new address is the one to call.
Tennessee has never taxed wages. The Hall income tax on interest and dividends was repealed for tax periods beginning January 1, 2021 or later, so there is no state personal income tax to plan around, just as in Nevada.
The general state sales tax rate is 7 percent, local rates set by county and city cannot exceed 2.75 percent, and food is taxed at 4 percent. Nevada's statewide minimum is 6.85 percent, but Tennessee's combined rate can run higher at the register once local tax is added.
