Moving from Reno to Spokane
Washington gives new residents 30 days to get a license and register vehicles, and it has no tax on wage income, with a 6.5 percent state sales tax. Spokane averages 45.4 inches of snow a year and sits about 785 miles from our Sparks warehouse.
Spokane is the largest city in Eastern Washington, 1,906 feet above sea level on the Spokane River. Like Nevada, Washington does not tax wages, which makes it one of the easier states for a Reno household to move to on the tax side. This page covers the Spokane end: licensing, sales tax, snow and housing.
Washington's 30 days and the tax difference
The Washington Department of Licensing tells new residents they have 30 days after moving to the state to get a Washington driver license and register their vehicle. The license comes first, because Washington requires one before it will register a vehicle in your name.
Washington has no wage income tax in 2026, according to its Department of Revenue, and the state sales tax rate is 6.5 percent, with a local portion added on top. Reno households will notice sales tax more than income tax. There is a separate excise tax on large capital gains, so anyone selling a business or investments in the move year should speak with a tax professional.

Snow and cold in the Inland Northwest
At the Spokane airport station NOAA lists a January high of 34.5 degrees and a low of 24.7, against 47.7 and 26.1 in Reno. Annual snowfall is 45.4 inches and annual precipitation is 16.45 inches. July highs are 84.4 in Spokane and 93.9 in Reno.
A move in the cold months calls for plans for a cleared driveway and a spare hour. Houseplants and anything that can freeze are best carried with you.
What Spokane costs
The American Community Survey shows the city of Spokane at a median home value of $363,500, median gross rent of $1,215 and median household income of $70,064. The Spokane-Spokane Valley metro lists medians of $405,300, $1,264 and $77,488. The Reno metro lists medians of $502,300, $1,592 and $87,485.
The metro's home value is lower than Reno's. These are medians for an area, not prices for any one house.

The long haul out of Sparks
You book with O'Brien's. An estimator visits your Reno or Sparks home for a free in-home estimate, 10 free heavy-duty boxes come with it, and we coordinate the move through the Bekins network. The interstate guide explains how it works.
The route data counts about 785 miles and 2 driving days at 500 miles a day, so your written estimate, not the map, sets the delivery window. Vault storage from $40 per month covers a gap before your Spokane keys.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.
