The East Bay to Reno is about 219 road miles, roughly 4 hours 19 minutes of free-flow driving, with 210 of the miles on I-80 and one climb over Donner Summit at about 7,200 feet. About 793 people a year moved from Alameda and Contra Costa counties to Washoe County in the Census flow data.
Oakland sits 17 feet above sea level and Reno about 4,500, so a truck out of Alameda or Contra Costa County gains more than 4,000 feet in a few hours. This is the shortest of the Bay Area routes into Reno, because I-80 starts almost at your door.

219 miles, almost all on I-80
From Oakland the route uses I-880 for about 7 miles, then I-80 for the remaining 210. It passes Vallejo, Fairfield and Davis, skirts Sacramento, climbs through Auburn and Colfax, and crosses into Nevada near Verdi. The crow-flies distance is about 180 miles, so the road adds only about 40.
That near-straight line makes the East Bay a one-day haul for the truck, and the free-flow driving time of 4 hours 19 minutes is shorter than from San Francisco (248 miles) or San Jose (255 miles). Your delivery window still comes from the written estimate, because loading, weight and scheduling decide the date more than the road does.
The Donner Summit crossing
The one pass is Donner Summit, about 7,200 feet by USGS. A heavy truck is among the first vehicles held back when winter storms bring chain controls. Caltrans QuickMap shows live chain requirements on I-80, and the NDOT site covers the Nevada slope.
If your move falls between November and March, ask the estimator how the crew plans a storm day. Our mountain pass reference lists each crossing and its winter rules.
Oakland compared with Reno
Oakland city has about 439,000 residents, a median household income near $101,600, a median gross rent near $1,979 a month, and a median home value near $929,900, according to the American Community Survey. Reno city's median household income, median gross rent and median home value are $80,760, $1,556 and $548,300.
Oakland's weather is mild: January highs near 58, July highs near 72, and about 19 inches of rain a year with no snow to speak of. Reno has hotter summer afternoons near 94, colder January nights near 26, about 7 inches of precipitation and 21 inches of snow. Expect to buy a snow shovel in your first month.

Booking with O'Brien's
The East Bay move is booked with O'Brien's, and we coordinate it from your Alameda or Contra Costa County address through the Bekins network. When the shipment reaches Northern Nevada, O'Brien's handles delivery, unpacking and storage from Sparks.
Pricing follows weight and the services you choose, and the an itemized written estimate. A free in-home estimate comes with 10 free heavy-duty boxes that you keep.
Timing the move
Many East Bay households leave when a lease ends or a house sells. If the keys to the Reno home are a week away, vault storage in the Sparks warehouse holds your furniture from $40 per month. Details on taxes and registration are on our California-to-Reno page.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.
