Stockton to Reno is about 182 road miles, roughly 3 hours 32 minutes of free-flow driving, using I-5 for 42 miles and I-80 for 124 over Donner Summit at about 7,200 feet. About 171 people a year moved from San Joaquin County to Washoe County, and about 179 moved the other way.
Stockton is the largest city in the Central Valley's northern end, with about 322,000 residents and a metro of nearly 800,000. The route north skips the Bay Area completely and joins the Sacramento corridor from the south.

I-5, then I-80
The route is 42 miles on I-5, 124 miles on I-80 and 11 miles on I-80 Business through Sacramento. The straight-line distance is only 135 miles, so the road adds about 47 miles to reach the interstate and the crossing. Stockton is on the same flat valley floor as Sacramento, about 11 feet above sea level, so the first 100 miles are level.
The climb begins after Roseville. From Auburn the grade rises through Colfax and Emigrant Gap to Donner Summit, about 7,200 feet, then drops toward Truckee, Verdi and Reno. Allow for a slower pace on the grade; the written estimate sets the delivery window.
Heat to snow
Stockton's July high averages about 95, close to Reno's 94, so summer weather is no shock. Winter is the change: the Stockton airport station reports about 13 inches of rain and almost no snow, while Reno averages about 21 inches of snow. Chain controls on I-80 over Donner can hold or slow trucks, so check Caltrans QuickMap and the NDOT site before a winter delivery.
Stockton and Reno compared
Stockton city has a median household income near $79,907, a median gross rent near $1,577 and a median home value near $440,900 in the American Community Survey. Reno city's medians are $80,760, $1,556 and $548,300. Rents are close; home prices are higher in Reno, and that detail shapes what households bring.
Flows run both ways. The Census counts about the same number of people moving from Washoe County to San Joaquin County as the other direction, so Reno is not only a destination for Stockton households.

How the move works with O'Brien's
You book with O'Brien's, the Bekins agent in Sparks, and we coordinate the move from your Stockton home through the Bekins network. O'Brien's then handles delivery, unpacking and storage, with vault storage from $40 per month if your closing date slips.
Because long-distance moves are priced by weight, a de-clutter before the estimate lowers the load. Our long-distance cost guide explains what drives the number.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

My family moved exclusively with Bekins when I was young and O'Brien's made it a pleasure to return to this fine local company. I would be pleased to have any members of O'Brien's as friends and highly recommend O'Brien's to anyone needing the services they provide!

Extremely happy with the moving experience. The moving team showed up on time, friendly and polite. They did a wonderful job moving our boxes and furniture to the new location. We moved a three bedroom home and I could not be more pleased with the employees who assisted with the move. Highly recommend O'Brien moving for your move.
