Davis and Woodland sit on the flat floor of the Sacramento Valley, about 40 feet above sea level, and the only real obstacle between them and Reno is the Sierra. At 149 miles this is one of the shortest long-distance routes O'Brien's books into Northern Nevada.

From the valley floor onto I-80

The route is 144 miles of I-80 plus about 3 miles of county road E6 near Davis. The road distance of 149 miles is only about 24 miles longer than the crow flies, because I-80 runs almost straight from Davis through Sacramento and Roseville to Auburn and the high Sierra.

At a little under three hours of free-flow driving, a Davis move is the shortest of the Sacramento-area routes and the first one where a truck might make a day trip from pickup to Sparks. Whether yours does is a scheduling question, and the written estimate sets the delivery window.

Donner Summit: the one pass

Donner Summit at about 7,200 feet is the highest point on the route, and the climb from the valley covers more than 7,000 feet in about 90 miles. In winter, Caltrans may require chains or close sections of I-80 during storms. Check Caltrans QuickMap for California and the NDOT site for Nevada.

University schedules matter here. Davis has a large student and faculty population, and late June and mid-September are busy for movers. Book early; see how far ahead to book movers.

Davis and Reno compared

Davis city has about 67,000 residents, a median household income near $90,045, a median gross rent near $2,187 and a median home value near $866,100 in the American Community Survey. Reno city's medians are $80,760, $1,556 and $548,300.

The weather swing is small compared with the coast. The Sacramento station records a July high near 94 and a January low near 38. Reno's July high is also near 94, but its January lows fall to 26 and it receives about 21 inches of snow a year against almost none in the valley.
