Santa Rosa to Reno is about 223 road miles, roughly 4 hours 34 minutes of free-flow driving, with 179 miles on I-80 and the Sierra crossing at Donner Summit, about 7,200 feet. Sonoma County sent about 274 people a year to Washoe County in the 2016-2020 Census flow data.
Santa Rosa is the largest city in Sonoma County, a metro of about 486,000 people, and it is the only North Bay origin that starts its trip on a state route through wine country. The truck leaves the county on CA 12, then joins I-80 near Fairfield for the long climb.

CA 12, CA 29 and then I-80
The route uses about 36 miles of CA 12 and a mile of CA 29 to cross from Sonoma Valley through Napa County and meet the interstate, then runs 179 miles on I-80. The road distance of about 223 miles compares with about 174 in a straight line, a smaller gap than from the South Bay or the coast.
CA 12 is two lanes in places, with vineyards, farm traffic and weekend visitors, so a household truck is slower on this leg than the map suggests. Once on I-80 at Fairfield the truck follows the same corridor as the East Bay and Sacramento routes: Davis, Auburn, Colfax and the grade to the summit.
Donner Summit in winter
Donner Summit at about 7,200 feet is the only pass. Sonoma County gets about 34 inches of rain a year in the NOAA normals but almost no snow, so a Sierra storm is unfamiliar territory for many families. Chain controls on I-80 are posted on Caltrans QuickMap, and the NDOT site covers the Nevada side.

Sonoma County and Reno compared
Santa Rosa city has a median household income near $99,060, a median gross rent near $2,152 and a median home value near $713,900, according to the American Community Survey. Reno city's medians are $80,760, $1,556 and $548,300.
Santa Rosa's January high is near 58 and its July high near 84, with chilly, damp nights. Reno's July high is about 94, its January lows reach 26, and it records about 7 inches of precipitation and 21 inches of snow in a year. The big difference is moisture: Santa Rosa gets more than four times as much rain as Reno.

How O'Brien's coordinates the move
You book with O'Brien's, and we coordinate the move from your Sonoma County home through the Bekins network. Delivery, unpacking and storage then happen in the Reno-Sparks area, where O'Brien's has operated since 1941. Your written estimate sets the delivery window.
Wine collections, art and glass are common in Sonoma homes. Tell the estimator about them at the free in-home estimate so the plan covers wrapping and handling.
Practical notes
After a fire-season move, keep copies of your inventory and condition report, since long-distance estimates are itemized. For Nevada registration and tax steps, read moving to Reno from California.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day. All three of the gentlemen who moved us were professional and courteous from start to finish. From the initial phone call to the completion of our move, we felt like we were treated as family. We would definitely use them again and recommend O'Brien's Moving and Storage to our friends in the future.

Both movers were courteous, efficient and very carful with my furniture. Also, talking with Janet over the phone was a pleasure.
