New Mexico is the state in this series where the paperwork rules are the hardest to boil down to a number. The Motor Vehicle Division speaks in terms of residency rather than days, and the state taxes sales through a gross receipts tax rather than a sales tax. This page reports what the state's own pages say, and leaves a figure out where they give none.

Residency, not a day count

The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division says that once you have established residency in New Mexico you are required to surrender your license from any other state and apply for a New Mexico license. For vehicles, its procedures manual lets a nonresident owner with current out-of-state plates use a vehicle in the state for a limited period. Neither rule is a published deadline for a new resident, so no deadline is printed here.

The practical advice is to ask the MVD, or visit a field office, in your first week, with your Nevada title, proof of insurance and proof of address in hand.

Income tax and gross receipts tax

New Mexico's personal income tax brackets top out at 5.9 percent, according to the Taxation and Revenue Department's current table. Instead of a sales tax, New Mexico levies a gross receipts tax on businesses, which is usually passed through to customers, and the state portion of the rate is 4.875 percent. Local governments add to it, so the rate at the register depends on the town.

Nevada has no state personal income tax, so New Mexico withholding is new. A tax professional can explain how a part-year return applies to your move date.

Housing and household income

In the Census American Community Survey, New Mexico's median household income is 64,059 dollars, its median gross rent is 1,067 dollars a month and its median home value is 248,100 dollars. Santa Fe is the capital. The Albuquerque area is the usual destination, and Reno to Albuquerque gives the miles, the passes and the numbers at both ends.

How the move works

You book with O'Brien's in Sparks. A free in-home estimate prices the move by weight and includes 10 free heavy-duty boxes. Packing and loading happen in Northern Nevada, and the Bekins network carries your goods to New Mexico. Your written estimate sets the delivery window.

Ask your estimator about any special items, such as pianos or large glass pieces, and read the moving inventory guide so high-value items are listed on the inventory.

Dry air and old wood

Northern Nevada and New Mexico both have dry air, but wood furniture can still move when the humidity changes. Give wood pieces and instruments a few days indoors before you judge them. If the New Mexico home is not ready, storage between homes holds furniture in the Sparks warehouse.

Both movers were courteous, efficient and very carful with my furniture. Also, talking with Janet over the phone was a pleasure.

The two employees showed up on time and were very polite and ready to work. Our quote was 8 hours and they finished in 5 hours. Office staff checked in prior to move and confirmed all details and check in after move to make sure everything was taken care of. Would use this company again for sure!
