New Mexico charges a 4.875 percent state gross receipts tax and a top income tax rate of 5.9 percent, where Nevada has no state personal income tax. New Mexico's own sources set no single new-resident day count for registering a car or getting a license.
New Mexico moves to Reno are the Southwest to Northern Nevada kind: high desert to high desert, with a long run through Arizona or Utah in between.

New Mexico rules worth knowing
New Mexico's Motor Vehicle Division says a nonresident owner may use a vehicle for 180 days without registering it if it carries current plates from the home state, and that anyone employed in New Mexico for 30 days or more within a 60-day period is presumed a resident. For licenses, the division says that once you establish residency you surrender your other-state license. It states no single day count for newcomers, so check with the MVD for your own situation.
Gross receipts, not sales tax
New Mexico levies a gross receipts tax, and the state portion is 4.875 percent, with local rates added on top. Its personal income tax tops out at 5.9 percent in the brackets published by the Taxation and Revenue Department. Nevada has no state personal income tax, and the Nevada taxes page sets out sales tax, property tax and the rest.
What the Census says about New Mexico
The 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey lists New Mexico at about 2.12 million people, with a median household income of $64,059, median gross rent of $1,067 and a median home value of $248,100. About 30 percent of households rent. The 2024 estimate of people who moved from New Mexico to Nevada is about 1,320, with a large margin of error, so treat it as a rough size rather than a count.

How the move works from New Mexico
You book the move with O'Brien's, and we coordinate it from your New Mexico home through the Bekins network. Albuquerque has its own page, moving from Albuquerque to Reno, with the drive and the numbers on both ends. After the trip we handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks, and your written estimate sets the delivery window.
Heavy pottery, framed art and southwestern furniture deserve extra padding; ask your estimator about custom crating for anything fragile or oversized.
Nevada in one short block
Nevada gives new residents 30 days to register a car and get a Nevada license. The full list is in our moving to Reno guide.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

We were referred to O'Brien's Moving and Storage though a friend in Reno. We couldn't be more pleased with the Professionalism and Service. They were quick to set up Luke to come out and give us a quote and scheduled the actual move date right away. Luke was on time for our quote as were the movers on our moving day. All three of the gentlemen who moved us were professional and courteous from start to finish. From the initial phone call to the completion of our move, we felt like we were treated as family. We would definitely use them again and recommend O'Brien's Moving and Storage to our friends in the future.

I love that you walked away knowing you are now a part of the O'Brien's family, whenever you need us we are a phone call away! I will let the movers know about the kind words expressed about them, that will be very satisfying for all of them. We will look forward to any referrals you send our way, thank you for the opportunity!
