Movers in Reno

Reno is a city of about 273,000 people and 114,000 households, and O'Brien's Moving & Storage reaches it from the Sparks warehouse in roughly 11 minutes. Half of those households rent, so a Reno move is as likely to involve a stairwell or an elevator as a driveway.

Reno is the largest city we serve, and it is not one kind of place. It is a downtown of towers and older apartment blocks, a university district, hillside neighborhoods that climb toward the Sierra, and newer subdivisions in the south and northwest valleys. The fact block above gives the city as a whole. This page explains how those figures change the way a move is planned, and the neighborhood pages linked below narrow it down to a single ZIP code.

A city split almost evenly between owners and renters

Reno is one of the few large Nevada cities where renting and owning come out nearly even, about 50 percent each. Renter households move more often, so Reno has a steady flow of apartment, condo and townhouse moves that begin and end on the same weekend. For those, the estimator asks about stairs, elevator reservations, loading zones and how far the truck must park from the door, because those details change the crew size more than the number of rooms does.

Owners look different. The median Reno home was built in 1990, and about 37 percent of homes date from before 1980. A newer house usually means a wide garage and a straight staircase. A mid-century home may have a narrow hallway, a basement or a steep front step, and the walk-through is where we spot it. See apartment and condo moves if your building has its own rules.

People are coming and going all the time

About 18 percent of Reno residents moved in the past year, according to the Census Bureau, and roughly one in three households moved into their current home in 2020 or later. Some of that is across town, and some is from other states. When the new home is somewhere else entirely, the long-distance side of the business takes over: Reno is our home base, and long-distance moves through the Bekins network start with the same free in-home estimate.

Getting around the city on moving day

From the warehouse on Glendale Avenue, most of Reno is a short drive west along the freeway corridor, with the city's southern and northwestern edges taking longer. Traffic matters more than distance. The crew leader plans the start time around school drop-off, event days at the downtown venues and the afternoon rush on the interstate, so the truck is not sitting in a queue when it could be loading.

Movers in Reno questions

Still have a question? Call 775-359-6683, Mon-Fri 8-5, or see the moving FAQ.

How long does it take to get from your warehouse to a Reno address?

The drive figure in the numbers above is the city center, about 11 minutes. Neighborhoods on the far south and northwest edges take longer, and each neighborhood page gives its own drive.

Do you move apartments in Reno?

Yes. With half of Reno households renting, apartment moves are part of nearly every week. Tell the estimator about stairs, elevators and parking so the crew arrives with the right plan.

Can I store things between a Reno move-out and move-in?

Yes. Your belongings go into wooden vaults in our Sparks warehouse, and about 2 to 3 weeks notice is needed to ship them back out. See storage between homes.

What customers say about O'Brien's

Leticia H.

O'Brien's Moving and Storage packing crew were great!! They were fast, friendly and most importantly, very professional. Thank you guys.

Michelle C.

Extremely happy with the moving experience. The moving team showed up on time, friendly and polite. They did a wonderful job moving our boxes and furniture to the new location. We moved a three bedroom home and I could not be more pleased with the employees who assisted with the move. Highly recommend O'Brien moving for your move.

Owner's reply

Michelle, thank you so much for taking the time to write this review. We are so happy to hear about the move experience you had with our company and glad to know we met your expectations! It means a lot to us to know that. Thank you for choosing us as your moving partner.

Sonia P.

Talk about organized people. I peeked in the truck about an hour into the job and was amazed at how well organized it was and how many of my things had protective coverings. Our bed is a mechanical one and a nightmare to us, but these guys had no issue with it at all. Although I have no desire to ever move again--but if I did, I would be calling these guys for sure!!!
