South Dakota and Nevada share a tax feature, no personal income tax, so a move from Sioux Falls or Rapid City is rarely about taxes. It is about weather, housing and the kind of town a household wants.
A shared tax feature
The South Dakota Department of Revenue says the state has no corporate, unitary or personal income tax. The state sales and use tax is 4.2 percent, down from 4.5 percent in July 2023, and municipalities may add 1 to 2 percent. Nevada also has no state personal income tax, so the comparison turns to sales tax, property tax and housing, which our cost of living page sets out.
South Dakota's 90-day rules
South Dakota gives you 90 days from arrival to title and license a vehicle, and a person who has lived there 90 days is a resident for licensing. Commercial license holders have 30 days. Those rules are for arrivals. When you leave, keep your South Dakota license valid until Nevada issues one, and plan to register in Nevada within 30 days.
The Census view
The 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey lists South Dakota at about 907,428 people, with a median household income of $75,081, median gross rent of $946 and a median home value of $257,400; 31.4 percent of households rent. Census estimates put the flow into Washoe County at about 77 a year over 2018 to 2022. State-level flows swing too much to quote.
