Moving to Reno from Kentucky

Kentucky has one of the shortest registration windows, so Kentucky movers are used to acting quickly. That habit is useful in Nevada too, where the clock runs for 30 days from the day you become a resident.

Kentucky's 15 days and 30 days

Kentucky Revised Statutes 186.020 says a person who brings a motor vehicle into the Commonwealth shall apply for registration within 15 days, and the Transportation Cabinet's DRIVE site says new residents must obtain a Kentucky credential within 30 days. The DRIVE page and the statute differ on the vehicle deadline, so the statute is the number to trust. These apply to people arriving. Leaving, your job is to close the Kentucky side after Nevada's is open.

Kentucky counties tax motor vehicles with an annual property tax billed through the county clerk, so ask the clerk how your final year works.

A flat 3.5 percent

Kentucky's individual income tax is a flat 3.5 percent in 2026, and the state sales tax is 6 percent. Nevada does not collect state income tax on wages. Some Kentucky cities also levy an occupational license tax on wages, so a Louisville or Lexington paycheck can have more than one deduction. Nevada has no such tax on individuals.
