Michigan has no grace period for new residents, who must title and register vehicles and get a license immediately after establishing residency. The drive from our Sparks warehouse is about 2,077 road miles.
Grand Rapids sits near the Lake Michigan shore, and the state's rules are stricter about timing than most. A household arriving from Reno has no grace period in Michigan, so the paperwork planning begins before the truck leaves Sparks. This page covers those rules, local housing, NOAA's record and how O'Brien's plans the shipment.
Michigan has no grace period
The Michigan Secretary of State says new residents must immediately title and register their vehicles at a Secretary of State office, and that there is no grace period in Michigan law. It also asks new residents to visit an office immediately to apply for a Michigan driver's license once residency is established. The Secretary of State's website sometimes blocks automated readers, so confirm the details on the agency page.
Michigan taxes individual income at a flat 4.25 percent for the 2026 tax year, and some Michigan cities levy a local income tax. The state sales tax is 6 percent, and Michigan has no local sales tax. Nevada has no individual income tax, so ask an accountant about the move year.

Grand Rapids housing
The American Community Survey lists a median home value of $244,500 for the city and $285,300 for the Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood metro. Median gross rent is $1,266 in the city and $1,202 in the metro, and median household income is $69,108 and $82,874. Reno's metro medians are $502,300 for a home, $1,592 for rent and $87,485 for income.
The metro is only 25.4 percent renters, a low share, against 46 percent in the city. That points to a market of owner-occupied houses outside the city, where garages and basements shape the shipment.
Lake-shore winters
NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for the Grand Rapids station list a January high of 31.0 degrees with a low of 18.6, and a July high of 83.1 with a low of 62.5. Annual precipitation is 39.4 inches and snow averages 77.6 inches. Reno's January high is 47.7 and its July high is 93.9.
July in Grand Rapids is milder than Reno's, which suits a summer move. For a winter delivery, make sure the drive and walk are cleared and that the crew has a dry place to set boxes.

How the move works with O'Brien's
The booking is with O'Brien's. We visit your Reno or Sparks home for a free, no-obligation in-home estimate, and 10 free heavy-duty boxes are yours to keep. The shipment is coordinated through the Bekins Van Lines network, and your written estimate sets the delivery window. The steps appear in order in how an interstate move works with a Bekins agent.
Because Michigan asks for titling right away, many households drive ahead and let the shipment follow. A wooden vault in our Sparks warehouse, from $40 per month, holds the household until you call for it.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.
