Moving day goes well when the paper is right and the path is clear. The list below is short on purpose, so you can run it from your phone while the crew works.
The morning before the crew arrives
Be dressed, fed and ready when the crew arrives. Park cars out of the way, clear the driveway or the loading area, and reserve a spot for the truck. If an elevator or a gate needs a code or a reservation, set it up the day before.
Put your personal bag, valuables, documents and medicine in a closed room or your car. Mark that room as not to be loaded.
- Unplug and defrost the refrigerator and freezer the day before.
- Drain hoses on the washer, and empty the gas and oil from any equipment.
- Take down curtains, mirrors and anything mounted to the walls.
- Leave drawers in place unless the crew tells you otherwise.

The walk-through with the crew lead
Walk every room with the crew lead. Point out fragile pieces, tight doorways, the order you want things loaded and anything staying behind. Confirm the address of the new home and your phone number.
A good lead will repeat what the estimate says. If the job in front of the crew differs from the estimate, say so before loading begins, not after.
The paperwork you sign
Federal rules for interstate household goods moves, in 49 CFR Part 375, require an inventory of your goods and a bill of lading that serves as the contract and receipt. Read the bill of lading guide and the inventory guide before the day if you can.
Check the inventory entries for items and condition notes, and keep your copies. The valuation coverage page explains the protection choice you made on the paperwork.
The final sweep
Before the truck leaves, open every closet, cabinet and drawer, check the garage and attic, and look behind doors. Then ask the lead to confirm what is on the truck against the inventory. Lock up, turn off lights and set the thermostat.
Take a few photos of the empty home. They help with the move-out inspection if you rent.

Unloading and the delivery check
At the new home, check the inventory as boxes come in and note any damage or missing item on the paperwork before you sign. Photograph damage at once. The moving claim guide explains what comes next. Direct furniture to its final room so it is not moved twice, and keep the first-night items within reach. Call 775-359-6683 if a question comes up.
