Self-storage means you carry everything in and out. Vault storage is the opposite arrangement: the crew packs, loads and brings the goods to the warehouse, and the vault stays closed until you call.
How the vaults work
A vault is a large wooden container that holds a defined amount of household goods. The crew places your belongings inside, wrapped and padded, and the vault is stored in the warehouse. O'Brien's runs a 30,000 square foot warehouse at the Glendale Avenue site in Sparks, the same site as the office and truck yard. Storage can be short or long term.
To get your things back, you give notice. About 2 to 3 weeks of notice is the planning figure for shipping stored goods.

What federal rules say about storage
When a mover holds goods in storage in transit, section 375.609 requires written notice of the date the goods convert to permanent storage, the nine-month period to file claims for loss or damage in transit, the end of the carrier's liability, and the fact that the goods become subject to the warehouseman's rules and charges. The notice must come at least 10 days before the storage period ends. When goods go into permanent storage, they are placed in the shipper's name with contact information.
When people use it
Typical reasons include a home that is not ready, a home being sold, a remodel, a downsizing move, or a seasonal home. Storage between moves is described in storage between homes, and the longer-term case is in long-term household storage.
What to confirm before you store
- The vault size and how many you need
- Who packs and who delivers the goods back
- How much notice is needed to retrieve them
- Whose name the storage is in and how billing works
Vault details are on the vault storage page, and the vault vs self storage guide compares the two.
Vaults and your paperwork
Stored goods are listed on an inventory, so you know what went in. Keep your copy of the inventory and the storage agreement together, because they are the two documents you will want when it is time to ship the goods to a new home. The office can walk through the process with your own records at 775-359-6683.
