This is a descent move. The truck leaves a town in the mountains, climbs to Donner Summit within minutes, and then drops about 90 miles to the Central Valley. Households that make it are usually trading snow, a short summer and a high cost of housing for valley weather, a state capital job market and a longer growing season.

The drive: I-80 from Truckee to the valley floor

The route is 91 miles of I-80 plus a short stretch of I-80 Business into Sacramento, with Donner Summit as the only pass. Because the summit sits right at the start of the trip, weather is a loading-day question more than a driving-day question. If a storm has chain controls on at the summit, the crew can wait for a window before the truck leaves Truckee, then run the long downhill in daylight.

Check Caltrans QuickMap the evening before and again on the morning of the move. It shows chain controls, closures and live camera views for the whole I-80 corridor.

What changes between Truckee and Sacramento

The table above sets both ends side by side. Census figures describe two very different housing markets: Truckee town has a median household income of $130,462 and a median home value of $947,900, with only 26.6 percent of households renting. Sacramento city has a median home value of $506,300 and 48.3 percent renters, so a family selling in Truckee often finds a larger house on the other end.

The rental side is more even. Median gross rent is $1,961 in Truckee and $1,779 in Sacramento. Plan your furniture around the change in climate as well: valley summers are hot, mountain homes often have wood stoves, snow gear and deep garage storage that an apartment in Midtown or Land Park may have no room for.

How a move inside California is handled

A move between two California addresses runs under O'Brien's California authority. The band above shows that O'Brien's is permitted in California with Cal PUC T-90973 (as published by O'Brien's). You book directly with O'Brien's, the estimator visits your Truckee home, and the written estimate sets your pickup and delivery plan.

California's Bureau of Household Goods and Services publishes the consumer rules for household goods carriers in the state, including what a written estimate and contract should contain. It is worth reading before you sign with any mover.

Planning the day

Truckee homes often have steep driveways, narrow forest roads and snow storage to deal with, so tell the estimator about access when you book. For the Sacramento end, ask about elevator reservations, parking permits and loading-zone rules if you are moving into a condo or a downtown building.

If your new place is not ready on the day the truck arrives, goods can wait in vault storage from $40 per month in Sparks. Our winter moving guide covers how crews plan around Sierra storms, and our packing checklist keeps the last two weeks organized.

Every in-home estimate includes 10 free heavy-duty boxes, yours to keep, so you can begin packing the closets and garage before the crew arrives.

Both movers were courteous, efficient and very carful with my furniture. Also, talking with Janet over the phone was a pleasure.

The two employees showed up on time and were very polite and ready to work. Our quote was 8 hours and they finished in 5 hours. Office staff checked in prior to move and confirmed all details and check in after move to make sure everything was taken care of. Would use this company again for sure!
