Moving to Reno from South Carolina
South Carolina's top income tax rate is 5.21 percent for 2026, down from 6 percent, and its sales tax is 6 percent with optional county add-ons. The SCDMV gives new residents 45 days for both a license and a vehicle.

What South Carolina asks of newcomers
South Carolina law gives the owner of a vehicle brought in from another state 45 days to license and register it, and SCDMV says to apply for an SC license or ID within 45 days of arriving. Military members and dependents get 90 days for a license. These rules are for arrivals; when you leave, keep your South Carolina license valid until Nevada issues one.
The 2026 tax change
Act 110 of 2026, signed March 30, 2026, sets a 2026 income tax of 1.99 percent on taxable income below $30,000 and 5.21 percent minus $966 on taxable income of $30,000 or more. The Department of Revenue says further cuts depend on revenue growth. The sales tax is 6 percent, and counties may add up to 1 percent with voter approval. Nevada has no state personal income tax.

The 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey lists South Carolina at about 5.30 million people, with a median household income of $69,324, median gross rent of $1,180 and a median home value of $259,000; 28.1 percent of households rent. The Census counted about 631 people moving from South Carolina to Nevada in 2024, with a large margin of error.
