Moving to Reno from Maine
Maine's 2026 income tax rates are 5.8, 6.75 and 7.15 percent, and new residents have 30 days to register a vehicle and 30 days to get a Maine license. Nevada has no state personal income tax and uses a 30-day window for both.

Maine and Nevada are about as far apart as the lower 48 allows, and the weather on the two ends of the trip could not be more different. Here is what a Maine household should know before the truck is booked.
Maine's 30 days
Maine's motor vehicle law requires an owner who becomes a resident to register a vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency, and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles asks for a new license within 30 days. Those windows apply to people arriving. Leaving Maine, keep your title, ask the town office about excise tax on your vehicle, which Maine collects locally, and cancel registration after Nevada plates are issued.
Maine property taxes are billed by the town on April 1 values, so a mid-year sale has its own proration.
Three rates, then none
Maine's 2026 individual income tax schedule has three rates: 5.8, 6.75 and 7.15 percent. The state sales tax is 5.5 percent. Nevada does not charge state income tax on wages. For many Maine households the difference in take-home pay is the largest financial change from the move. Ask a tax professional about a part-year return.

Getting a Maine home to Nevada
