Alabama gives new residents 30 days to register a car and 30 days of driving on an out-of-state license, and its income tax tops out at 5 percent, a rate Nevada does not have. If you are leaving Alabama for Reno, the paperwork that matters most is on the Nevada side, where the same 30-day clocks apply.
Alabama and Northern Nevada sit almost as far apart as two places in the lower 48 can, so this is a true cross-country move and it helps to plan it in stages. The numbers above come from Alabama's own agencies; this page explains what they mean when you are the one packing the truck.

What Alabama asks of you on the way out
Alabama's Department of Revenue says the owner of a non-commercial vehicle registered in another state has 30 days from the day it enters Alabama to register it there. That deadline protects people arriving in Alabama, so it is not a form you need to file when leaving. Your job on the Alabama side is closing things out: cancel or transfer your Alabama tag when you register in Nevada, update your insurance garaging address, and ask your county about any property tax bill that covers part of the year.
Keep your Alabama license until you hold a Nevada one. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency describes the 30 days a newcomer may drive on an out-of-state license, and Nevada runs on a matching 30-day rule for people arriving, so carry your Alabama card, your Social Security number and two proofs of your new address when you go to the Nevada DMV.
Taxes: Alabama's graduated income tax versus none
Alabama taxes income in steps of 2, 4 and 5 percent, and its constitution caps the top rate at 5 percent. The state's base sales tax is 4 percent, and cities and counties add their own on top. Nevada has no state personal income tax on wages, so your paycheck changes the day you become a Nevada resident.
Do not assume that means a smaller tax bill all around. Nevada raises money through sales tax and other charges instead, so compare your whole budget and not just the paycheck. A part-year Alabama return for the year you move is normal; ask a tax professional how it applies to you.
How the move works with O'Brien's
You book the move with O'Brien's in Sparks. We coordinate it from your Alabama home through the Bekins network, and then our own crews take over in Northern Nevada for delivery, unpacking and, if the new home is not ready, storage in our 30,000 square foot warehouse. Your written estimate sets the delivery window, and the itemized written estimate is explained on our binding and non-binding estimate guide.
The free in-home estimate is done by an O'Brien's estimator, and it comes with 10 free heavy-duty boxes to keep. For an Alabama move you can also see the Birmingham to Reno route page, which prints the drive and the numbers at both ends.

Arriving in Nevada
Nevada gives new residents 30 days to get a Nevada license and to register a vehicle, and it has no state personal income tax. The complete checklist, including utilities and schools, is in our moving to Reno guide.
Planning an Alabama-to-Nevada timeline
Alabama summers are humid and Reno's are dry, which matters for what you pack. Wood furniture that has lived through Gulf-state humidity can shrink in Nevada's dry air, so ask your estimator how to wrap it. Photograph electronics before they are disconnected, and keep the inventory the crew prepares; the moving inventory guide explains how it protects you.
If your Alabama house closes before your Reno home is ready, storage in transit or storage between homes in vaults at our Sparks warehouse fills the gap. Vault storage starts from $40 per month.
How a long-distance move works with a Bekins agent
O'Brien's Moving & Storage has been an agent for Bekins Van Lines since 1955. On an interstate move the Bekins network carries your shipment under the van line's interstate system; O'Brien's books the move in either direction. Leaving Northern Nevada, we give the free in-home estimate, pack, store in our Sparks warehouse if you need it, and load. Moving here from another state, you book with us and we coordinate the move from your origin through the Bekins network, then handle delivery, unpacking and storage in Sparks. Your written estimate sets the delivery window. What being a Bekins agent means.

How long do I have to register my car in Nevada after moving from Alabama?
Nevada's statute gives new residents 30 days to register a vehicle, or until they get a Nevada license if that comes first. Bring your Alabama title or registration and proof of insurance.
Does Alabama still tax me after I leave?
Alabama taxes the income you earned while a resident, so a part-year return is common in the year you move. Nevada has no personal income tax. Confirm your situation with a tax professional.
Who actually moves my things out of Alabama?
You book with O'Brien's and we coordinate the move from your Alabama home through the Bekins network, then deliver and unpack in Northern Nevada. Your written estimate lists how it will be handled.
