Visalia is the largest city in Tulare County, with about 143,900 residents and a July high near 98 degrees at the Hanford station. Reno is nearly as hot in July at 93.9 degrees, but its January highs sit in the 40s instead of the 50s, and the nights are cold. The drive between them is one of the longer Central Valley routes that still fits in a single day.

The drive: CA 99 north, then I-80

The route data counts about 201 miles on CA 99, roughly 124 on I-80, 9 on I-80 Business and 4 on CA 198, the road that connects Visalia to the valley highway. That means more than half the trip is flat valley driving through farm towns and Sacramento, followed by the long climb toward the Sierra.

The valley miles are fast but not always smooth, because CA 99 shares the road with heavy produce and freight traffic, and fog can reduce visibility on winter mornings. Once the truck turns onto I-80 the grade begins, and it keeps climbing to Donner Summit at about 7,200 feet, with chain requirements possible in storms.

The driving time on this page is a free-flow number. Delivery windows come from the written estimate, and our estimators plan for weather on the Sierra crossing rather than treating it as a surprise.

Crews often start before sunrise on a valley route like this one. Loading early keeps the afternoon heat off the crew and the furniture, and it puts the truck on the climb in daylight.

What the miles mean for a move

A 341-mile trip is a one-day drive for a truck, and for a Bekins agent move it is priced by shipment weight, not by the clock. The itemized inventory and condition report made before packing is the record the weight and the written estimate rest on.

Visalia homes are often single-story with large garages and outdoor furniture. Patio sets, tools and yard equipment are part of the inventory like anything else, and the estimator will ask about them during the in-home walkthrough or phone ballpark.

Cost and climate at both ends

Visalia city's median gross rent is $1,490 and its median home value is $371,500 in the Census numbers shown above. Reno city is $1,556 and $548,300, so buying costs more on the Nevada end while renting is close. Census medians describe areas, not any one household.

Census flow estimates between Tulare County and Washoe County are very small and carry a margin of error larger than the estimate, so the plain reading is that people move both ways in modest numbers. Visalia has no snow in the normals; Reno averages about 21 inches, so plan for a first Sierra winter.
