Moving from Nevada to Hawaii

Hawaii is the one state where a move from Nevada is not a road trip at all. That changes how you plan your car, your timing and your budget. It also brings a tax system that looks nothing like Nevada's, so read the numbers below before you decide what to ship.

Islands, not highways

There is no road between Nevada and Hawaii, so there is no mileage or drive time to plan around. Registering your vehicle in Hawaii

Hawaii Revised Statutes section 286-54 gives you thirty days after commencing to operate the vehicle in Hawaii to apply for registration. If you plan to bring a car, ask your O'Brien's estimator about auto transport with your move early, because the car has to be in Hawaii before the 30-day clock can start.

Counties administer registration and licensing in Hawaii, so the office you use depends on the island. Gather your title, your Nevada registration and proof of insurance before you leave.

Your driver license

The state statute on license requirements exempts a person who is at least eighteen years old and holds a valid driver license from elsewhere, but Hawaii publishes no single day count for new residents. Check with the driver licensing office of the county where you will live before your Nevada license expires.

Ask that office which documents it wants as proof of identity and of your new address, so the first visit is the only visit.

Taxes in Hawaii

Hawaii does not have a sales tax. Instead it has the General Excise Tax, assessed on business activity at 4 percent for most businesses, with a county surcharge of up to 0.5 percent that many businesses pass on to customers. Prices at the register can therefore run slightly above 4 percent.

Income tax is the larger change from Nevada, which has no state personal income tax. Hawaii's Department of Taxation schedule for tax years beginning after December 31, 2024 reaches a top rate of 11 percent on income above $650,000 for a single filer, with lower brackets below. A 2024 law adjusts the brackets in 2025, 2027 and 2029. Talk with a tax professional about a part-year return for the year you move.

What the numbers say about living there

The Census Bureau reports Hawaii's median household income at $100,389 and median gross rent at $1,971, with a median home value of $839,100. About 37 percent of households rent. Those figures are why many families move in with a rental first and shop for a home after they arrive.

Census migration estimates show about 1,355 people living in Hawaii in 2024 who had lived in Nevada a year earlier, with a sizeable margin of error. Nevada and Hawaii exchange residents in both directions every year.
